And it did not disappoint. About three weeks ago when I saw I could get a rezzie on a Saturday, I didn't hesitate and booked a table for 4 at 5:30. It was the only choice, aside from 10:30pm. I figured I'd round up another couple later on, which I did no problem. Our friends Cork and Andrea met us in the Fillmore district last night for an adventure in eating. The much hyped place is definitely deserving.
We ordered some dishes straight from the menu, and cherry picked our way through the rest passing by on carts and trays, just like a dim sum place. Everything was really well seasoned and packed with flavor. By the end, I felt as though I'd eaten my way around the world. Amazingly, thanks to the small plates, I didn't feel overstuffed. We also shared a bottle of red, four additional glasses of wine, and two beers. At just under $150 a couple, that was also amazing considering the breadth of our consumption.
This is what we ate:
Heirloom tomatoes with sweet corn and smoked salmon (fresh and bursting with flavor)
Oysters on the half shell
Duck liver mousse with almond biscuit (sublime)
Shitake mushroom ravioli with aromatic broth (divine little pillows)
Haricot verts, pickled egg salad, nuts and seeds (wow, this was brilliant and so good)
Garlic bread with burrata (loved the burrata cheese)
Tomato-dashi mushrooms with charred eggplant
Sweet corn and garlic chive shortstack with Mt. Tam fromage (incredible little pancakes)
CA state bird with provisions (fried quail with onion jam and reggiano--my fave)
Cumin lamb with scallions, grapes and spinach (made a la plancha-t'was like a stir fry)
Sand dabs most exquisite (can't remember what went with but I love these dabs)
Summer melon melange with I forget what else
I love this little anime clip sent out with a dessert (below)
Cheesecake Japonais, tomato caramel, fresh strawberries (light and fluffy with amazing tomatoes)
Double chocolate pudding, birdseed crunch, passionfruit (really easy to eat)
"World Peace" peanut muscavado milk shot (peanuty milk)
I will return, for sure. Next time I can get in on a Saturday...
