I am not the gym-joining type. Like organized team sports, they have always intimidated me. Blame it on growing up in a family of nine kids where the front yard was for touch football or frisbee, the half-court driveway for basketball, the middle backyard for climbing trees and the back-backyard was for swimming.
The 70s were different for sporty girls. We had kickball, softball and cheerleading--that's it. To play other sports meant with my Dad and assorted siblings outside. My kind of family, the large and overtly Catholic type in the big house up the street, were usually more rough and tumble than genteel. So I'm a scrappy kind of girl.
Which is why, nursing a sore knee, I've had to switch out running for brisk 30 minute walks. Living in the hills, my hikes in the canyon have not improved the knee. Which means one of two things...either I am getting older or I need to get a pool.
